Collections of Daily Exercises as a mean of improving one's technique were hugely popular in the XIX century.

This collection by Dotzauer's best student is a set of 28 short caprices of varied difficulties, spanning all technical tools a cellist should have at their disposal (only notable absent are artificial harmonics, which were just beginning to be used on the cello).
