Cari tutti,

spero che voi e i vostri cari stiate bene, ovunque siate adesso nel mondo e che possiate essere sereni in questo periodo che richiede la massima disciplina da ognuno di noi. Purtroppo, pochi stanno comprendendo la reale severità della situazione e quei pochi sono proprio coloro che hanno subito una perdita nella propria famiglia.

In tanti abbiamo pensato "Speriamo che non accada a me" e lo ammetto, io ero uno dei tanti ma, alla fine, due giorni fa, il Covid ha colpito anche la mia famiglia, portandoci via Ljubomir, zio della mia compagna, e stimato violoncellista di Belgrado. Se ne va un musicista sincero, fiero e onesto, che tanto mi ha aiutato negli anni più difficili della mia vita in cui l'esito del mio percorso formativo era davvero appeso a un filo.

Quanto più mi addolora è il fatto di come i soccorsi, chiamati anticipatamente, non siano arrivati se non con due ore di ritardo rispetto al decesso, e questo perché, grazie alla mancanza di disciplina generale, il sistema sanitario è completamente saturato e impossibilitato a reagire con tempistiche appropriate al salvare delle vite umane.

Ljubomir ha dedicato tutta la sua vita alla musica e all'insegnamento del violoncello e della musica da camera. Tutte le principali scuole di musica di Belgrado hanno avuto l'onore di averlo come professore di orchestra e di musica da camera, poiché spesso, se non sempre, questo si traduceva nei primi premi ai concorsi nazionali e internazionali.

È quindi allo "Zio Ljubo" che desidero dedicare la mia prossima pubblicazione. In parte essa esisteva già nel catalogo, in quanto si tratta del Concerto n° 4 op. 65 di G. E. Goltermann, al quale oggi si unisce il mio arrangiamento per violoncello solista e orchestra d'archi, un lavoro che mi ha occupato per gli ultimi sei mesi. Non si tratta di una semplice riduzione che inserisce le parti aggiuntive nelle pause degli archi, bensì di una totale riscrittura da zero in cui ogni linea pensata e inserita dal compositore ha trovato una nuova casa nel suono degli archi. Non parliamo di una riduzione per quartetto d'archi (quella verrà, ma più avanti), bensì per un'orchestra d'archi completa, con almeno 2 contrabbassi.

Tutte le parti sono scritte con un utilizzo esteso dei divisi, la maggior parte con una prima parte ("1. solo") a contrastare "gli altri" e solo nei Tutti con una divisione ordinaria a metà sezione. Ecco la prima pagina in anteprima:

La scelta di una tale mole di lavoro è dedicata soprattutto al 2° e 3° movimento del brano che, senza i fiati, davvero perdono quasi tutta la loro efficacia. Il controtema del Fagotto 1 nell'Andantino è di una bellezza tale che non poteva non essere affidato al 1° violoncello della sezione, con la 1ª viola ogni tanto a rispondere con il Fagotto 2.

Il risultato uditivo è stato più volte analizzato tramite librerie sonore professionali (BBCSO su Logic Pro X) al fine di controllarne il bilanciamento. Spero con tutto il cuore che numerose scuole di musica potranno godere di questa nuova piccola perla nel loro repertorio.

La partitura e le parti sono disponibili come due acquisti separati e anche la versione originale è stata aggiornata correggendo alcuni errori trovati e gentilmente segnalati dai primi fruitori di questo progetto. I hope that you and your loved ones are well, wherever you are now in the world and that you can manage to be serene in this period which requires the utmost discipline from each one of us. Unfortunately, few are realizing the real severity of the situation and those few are the very ones who have suffered a loss in their family.

Many of us must have thought "Let's hope it doesn't happen to me" and I admit, I was one of many but, in the end, two days ago, Covid also hit my family, taking away Ljubomir, uncle of my partner, and esteemed cellist from Belgrade. A sincere, proud and honest musician has left us, one who has helped me so much in the most difficult years of my life when the outcome of my training was really hanging by a thread.

What hurts me so much more is the fact of how the rescue team, called in advance, did not arrive until two hours after the death, and this is because, thanks to the lack of general discipline, the health system is completely saturated and unable to react with appropriate timing to save lives.

Ljubomir has dedicated his entire life to music and to teaching cello and chamber music. All major Belgrade music schools have had the honor of having him as a professor of orchestra and chamber music, as this often, if not always, resulted in first prizes at national and international competitions.

It is therefore to "Uncle Ljubo" that I wish to dedicate my next publication. In part it already existed in the catalog, as it is Concerto n ° 4 op. 65 by G. E. Goltermann, which today is joined by my arrangement for solo cello and string orchestra, a work that has occupied me for the last six months. It is not a simple reduction that inserts the additional parts into the rests of the strings, but a total rewriting from scratch in which each line conceived and written by the composer has found a new home in the sound of the strings. We are not talking about a reduction for string quartet (that will come, but later), but for a complete string orchestra, with at least 2 double basses.

All parts are written with an extensive use of divisi, most with a first part ("1. solo") to contrast "gli altri" and only in the Tutti with an ordinary division in the middle of the section. Here is the first page as a preview:

The choice of such a large amount of work is mainly dedicated to the 2nd and 3rd movements of the piece which, without the winds, really lose almost all their effectiveness. The counter-theme of the First Bassoon in the Andantino is of such a beauty that it could only be entrusted to the 1st cello of the section, with the 1st viola occasionally responding with Bassoon 2's part.

The auditory result has been repeatedly analyzed using professional sound libraries (BBCSO on Logic Pro X) in order to check its balance. I hope with all my heart that many music schools will be able enjoy this new little gem in their repertoire.

The score and the parts are available as two separate purchases and also the original version has been updated by correcting some errors found and kindly reported by the first users of this project.
